Talbina

Talbīna is a traditional food made from barley flour (شعير) cooked with water or milk, often sweetened with honey or dates. It has a porridge-like consistency, similar to milk (which is why it is called “talbina” – from laban, meaning milk in Arabic). It is a Sunnah food praised in authentic hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for its healing effects, especially in times of sadness, illness, or grief.

✅ 1. Talbina Relieves Grief and Sorrow

📚 Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 5058 & 5325)
Narrated by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):

“كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُخِذَ أَهْلُهُ الْوَعْكُ أَمَرَ بِالْحَسْوَةِ مِنَ التَّلْبِينَةِ، فَكَانَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّهَا تُجِمُّ فُؤَادَ الْمَرِيضِ، وَتَذْهَبُ بِبَعْضِ الْحُزْنِ.”
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves some of his sorrow.”

“I used to order Talbina to be made for the sick and for one who was grieving over a dead person. It gives relief to the heart of the sick person and removes some of the sorrow.”

Narrated by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):

“إِذَا مَاتَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا، فَاجْتَمَعَ النِّسَاءُ، ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْنَ، أَمَرَتْ بِبُرْمَةٍ مِنْ تَلْبِينَةٍ فَطُبِخَتْ، وَصُنِعَ ثَرِيدٌ، فَصَبَّتِ التَّلْبِينَةَ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَتْ: كُلْنَ مِنْهَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: التَّلْبِينَةُ مُجِمَّةٌ لِفُؤَادِ الْمَرِيضِ، تُذْهِبُ بَعْضَ الْحُزْنِ.”

“When someone from her (Aisha’s) family died, and the women gathered and then left, she would order that Talbina be cooked. Then she would pour it over tharid (bread + meat) and say: ‘Eat it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Talbina soothes the heart of the sick and takes away some sorrow.’”

📚 Al-Mustadrak (Hadith 8245)
Narrated by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):

“عَلَيْكُمْ بِالتَّلْبِينَةِ، فَإِنَّهَا تَغْسِلُ بَطْنَ أَحَدِكُمْ كَمَا تَغْسِلُ إِحْدَاكُمْ وَجْهَهَا مِنَ الْوَسَخِ”
“You should take Talbina, for it cleanses the stomach of one of you just as one of you washes her face from dirt.”
